If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed lately — by money worries, the pressure of work, or simply a persistent sense that things aren’t quite right — you are not alone. In fact, you’re part of a very large group. Landmark new research has revealed that mental health in the UK is at its worst since the 2008 financial crisis, with millions more people now struggling than at any point in the last decade and a half.

The Mental Health Foundation’s new Foundation Reports series, based on 15 years of data from over 40,000 individuals, has found that one in four UK adults — around 14 million people — are now experiencing mental distress. That’s 4.8 million more than in 2009. The research points to austerity, the Covid-19 pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis as the main drivers behind this sharp increase.

The findings show that those hit hardest are people under financial pressure, with more than half of people experiencing financial difficulties (54%) also experiencing poor mental health. Young people have been particularly affected — nearly one in three under-25s now experience mental distress, compared with fewer than one in four just fifteen years ago. Women are also disproportionately impacted.

The good news is that seeking professional support genuinely works. Talking therapies, CBT, and other psychological approaches have a strong evidence base — and the earlier you reach out, the better the outcomes tend to be. Feeling anxious, low, or stuck isn’t a weakness; it’s a signal worth listening to. A skilled psychologist or counsellor can help you understand what’s driving how you feel and give you practical tools to move forward.
